Omega-3: The Lost Nutrient

Today, researchers estimate around 80% of the sources of Omega-3 have disappeared from the food sources that comprise our Western diet. This means that, unlike our Paleolithic ancestors whose diet was comprised of both the essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in the right proportions, Omega-3 has literally become the missing, or “lost nutrient” in our diet.

What was once a healthy balance of Omega-6 to Omega-3 in the human diet has now become dangerously out of balance. Although Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fresh cold-water fish such as mackerel, salmon, and sardines, much of our foods have become laden with unhealthful “trans fats”, through the process of hydrogenation (turning fats that are liquid at room temperature into solids through adding hydrogen atoms, all in order to extend useful shelf life of countless processed foods).

Furthermore, during the last 10-15 years, Americans have decided to go “fat-free” — despite the fact that thousands of studies now suggest the importance of essential fatty acids in the diet to combat disease and to help our cells become more efficient in their fat burning, and less proficient in their fat storing capabilities.

Dr. Madsen’s Omega-3 MD™ Phytoplankton-Fish Oil Supplement has been developed to support our Western diet, which is increasingly becoming stripped of essential Omega-3 fatty acids. It is the best way to help yourself regain that “lost nutrient”.
